The Five Minute Box and The Number Box have been developed by Jane Kendall BA, Dip RSA SpLD.
Jane has taught since 1971, and has always had a particular interest in mainstream children with special needs . She has worked as a Primary School class teacher, a Support Service teacher and was a full time SENCO for 10 years in a mainstream school. She has also worked as a Borough trainer of TAs.
Jane has worked in both state and independent sector schools. The development of her highly practical Literacy and Numeracy Boxes now takes her countrywide, training teachers and TAs
Jane speaks at conferences and workshops, and not particularly to sell The Box. She focuses rather on the underlying reasons for children failing to make progress - the effects early failure has on self esteem and the impact the anxiety has on working relationships in families and peer groups etc. She also looks at ways of turning the image of 'support' around to enable children to see themselves as learners who are being enabled. She looks at issues such as class tests, worksheets, homework etc and provides alternative, positive experiences for those children which can easily be run alongside mainstream class provision.
Jane looks at both literacy and numeracy - and can adapt talks to accomodate either or both. She would, of course, always be pleased to have any promotion of the Boxes included in publicity materials! They are now in nearly 3000 schools, and latest research from Southampton has been very encouraging - showing that children continue to make progress after the intervention.
